Nairobi City is the capital of Kenya and is Kenya’s principal economic, administrative and cultural center and is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in Africa. It is situated at an altitude of just over 1600 m (5450 ft). It hosts most of the embassies, High Commission and consulates that represents their countries in Kenya.

Being a cosmopolitan town, it offers some of the best restaurants and you are almost guaranteed to get any kind of food found anywhere in the world! It is said that Kenya has the best Indian restaurant in the world!!

Some of the activities you can do while in Nairobi

The National Museum:

It is located is situated 5 minutes away from the city center. It houses an extensive ornithological collection representing most of Kenya’s thousand odd species of birds. The Gallery of Contemporary East Africa Art is an exhibition area for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda artists to display their artwork. Within the Museum grounds are an aquarium and a snake park with live African snakes and are definitely worth a visit if reptiles interest you.

Kenya Railway Museum

Nairobi exists because of the Uganda Railway. It is filled with wonderful historical photographs and relics from old trains, as well as actual trains you can climb onto. One of them is the carriage in which Charles Ryall of “Man Eaters of Tsavo Fame” and “The Ghost and Darkness” was seized from.

Karen Blixen Museum

The story of Karen Blixen was made famous in the film “Out of Africa”. It is located in the house where Karen Christence Blixen-Finecke lived from 1914-1931

Nairobi National Park

Virtually within earshot of downtown Nairobi, the 113 sq km area covered by Nairobi National Park consists primarily of unspoilt plains and woodlands. Approximately 80 species of large mammals – excluding the elephants – make this region their home. Should be in transit and time is an issue, a visit to this park is well worth the effort as it give you and idea of what the country offers in terms of flora and fauna.

Giraffe Manor (Giraffe Center)

The Giraffe Manor was bought by the original owners who moved five baby endangered Rothschild Giraffe where they successfully reared them. It is open to visitors and guests can feed and photograph the tame Giraffes and warthogs that wander around the Manor gardens.

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary

The center was opened by Daphne Sheldrick to take care of orphaned animals especially the elephants and rhinos. Your visit to this sanctuary helps in the protecting some of Kenya’s endangered wildlife. During your visit, you will get to learn a lot ob Kenya’s conservation works and see the orphan elephants and rhinos being feed by a team of dedicated team of conservationist.
